Re: 1998 Rinker 242---5.7 EFI (thread restart)

10054727 is the cast number on the block. Looking it up it is a truck block so the guy at the shop in Chesapeake did not do me any favors when I paid for a rebuilt marine engine obviously.
thanks

Truck or boat same thing, so no worries. You have a one piece rear main and a good block. The cast numbers cover 2 and 4 bolt mains.
It is as follows

10054727...350...86-up...2 or 4...one piece rear seal, some "Made in Canada"

My good block comment came from your statement of option 3 post 9, your block is rebuildable. At least that is the way I took it

No sure if he planned on using my block or not he just said he could build one for that much. Have to clarify with him on that.

Joe id like to ad a comment...

Yes you proly could rebuild your current block and it happens all the time.....thats what you would be getting if you bought a remanufactured engine.....thats what they do, take blown motors and rebuild them.

If you rebuilt your motor stock it will cost you about the same as the reman stock motor...but with little or no warrenty.

Or rebuild your motor with the mind set to build a 383 or 355 motor and have a reputal shop do all the work for say around $3500.00

Or GET A BRAND NEW STOCK motor with a 3 year warrenty from Summit and buy NEW manifolds and risers for the same cost.

I just rebuilt my 350 motor and it cost me about $800.00 or so to do it and i did everything except the machine work myself...... No warrenty or nothing...so knock on wood she'll last forever!

Thats my point...do you want a reliable ride or take another chance with a rebuilt unit!

P.S. BTW all GM small blocks start out as a base Chevy motor....there is no diffence in marine or truck/car motor - except for the cam, brass freeze plugs and spark prof externals.

Good luck!

Thanks for the input.... I am sitting here scratching my head trying to figure out the feasibility of spending another $4000 plus in a reman/new unit with new exhaust and risers or do as you did do all the work myself with exception of the machine work and maybe keep the wifey a little while longer.
I am pretty confident in my craftsmanship and have access to plenty of tools, experience and such so will figure it out. I have a little while before the wife makes me get rid of it all or me so thanks again...:yield:

You don't have to spend $4000. Either redo the motor yourself or buy one all done and install it.
I'd want to look over what's left of your existing one first, might be a good one to fix, or might not. I'd redo my own, but I like that sort of thing. If it's a chore don't do it yourself. But if it will be a learning thing followed by personal pride in a job done, and done your way. Sure redo it yourself.
You can either replace the rotating assembly to get a stroker, or save whatever is ok to be cost effective and redo it as a 350. Maybe with a rebore.
I'd do some research and make sure you have proper quench pistons that are made to work below those vortec heads. With the correct pistons, compression ratio and cam you can get nice behavior and a long living engine.
I'd suggest you read this, V6 to V8 engine swap even if you don't stroke it, this thread is full of wise advice that you can use.

I still wonder where the $4000 went into the current engine that is not complete.

I think he explained that he bought and installed a motor, stored the boat for 11 months. Ran the motor which then failed. Then he moved and is not near the original seller, who was not cooperating anyway. So he "sunk" $4000 with little result, and has the remains of his new engine to start from... Unlucky guy is now in process of making lemonade out of lemons.

EXACTLY!!!! http://forums.iboats.com/non-repair-i-o-inboards/5-7-7-4-swap-557769.html this is one of my original posts that I did last when I first got home from deployment and explains the beginning of the story. I did not use this original post because it was over 90 days since last used and did not want to break the site rules.

HOLY SH*$!!!!!!! Just got a certified letter from my bank. Apparently while I was on deployment the bank charged me lots of money and my wife did a survey for them and complained about it.....Well they returned all the money that was paid to them in fees in the amount of $7000....Merry Christmas to me... WOW now I am hot on the lookout for a new engine for sure. I even called the bank to make sure the check was legit and all the lady could say was yes it sure is and merry Christmas.....

Still unsure whether I am rebuilding the base I have or buying new but defiantly have the extra to through at it now....Later all heading shopping...

The 383 would be a nice motor. Since you have a Bravo III already you wouldn't have to worry about toasting the drive either.

If money is not a big issue now, then I would suggest a complete bobtail engine. Complete plug and play. Here's one on ebay for $5,295.
