1999 90 horse force

Trim would only trim down, I bought two relays it worked up once down half way, put one old relay back and it did the same thing, wait ten minutes or so it works. anyone whats going on?

The trim motor may be going out. Locate the two plugs for the trim motor. It should be in the cowling befor the two relays. Attach a jumper wire to one and connect to a possitive on a battery and the other to ground. Your bypassing the switches and wiring harness. It will either go up or down. Reverse the wires for the opposite direction. If it still has a problem going up. Replace the trim motor. If it works fine then it's something electrical, check battery voltage and make sure it's got juice, trace wires looking fore bare spots shorts or a bad ground.

Not familiar with that particular trim motor BUT--Mercury MAY have put a bimetal circuit breaker inside the motor to protect against overheating. Heats up and opens--motor doesn't work. 10 minutes later it cools and closes--motor works again. Old Chrysler motors had an internal circuit breaker so it is a reasonable thought.

If it is there it would be under the top cap. before you go tearing into it try the Mercury forum to see if anyone knows if there IS an internal breaker. THEN find out why it is drawing so much current that it trips the breaker.
