I have been shopping around for a good used motor and came across a 1999 35hp evinrude. This motor is only a two cylinder 2 stroke. I thought all the 35 hp motors for that year were 3 cylinder. I didn't get any of the serial number. It was a tiller with electric start, no tilt or trim, really light around a hundred pounds. Can anybody give me any info on this motor including pro's or con's. Thanks in advance.

Re: 1999 evinrude 35 hp

i would love to have one. i have a 93 40hp, great motor, there were no bad motors, only bad owners, if the compression is above 100psi, and within 10% of each other, it has spark, and pumps water, go for it. try to find out what maintanance has been done, when the water pump was last changed. most of the 3 cylinders were 50 and above. i really like all my 2 cylinder motors.

The seller said it has 125 psi on both cylinders and they changed the pump and would send me video of the motor running (it's from a dealership). It was just all the 35 hp motor info I was finding was for three cylinder motors not two. I wanted to make sure they weren't trying to sell something for what it is not. They want $1200.00 for it. It's going on a 16'6" alumacraft lunker. I had a 18 tohatsu 4 stroke and need a little more power.

The latest two cylinder 35hp in the 1990's as far as I can see is 1996. Get the model number from them.

I emailed them for the model number. I'll post up when I get it. That was the same thing that I was finding, no two cylinder for that year. That is why I figured I would come look for some help. Thanks.

Well this is the response I got from the seller. Let me know what you think.

"AML 35 D, it was originally designed for the military, it is a normal 35 hp except for a purge valve J/E added to drain water from the block in case the engines were ever submerged this one no longer has the valve it was removed and has been converted to electric start.` Thanks."

Well military outboard is different then. AML35D is a 1995-96 35 hp Military outboard.

I would keep looking. I bought one of those a couple years ago and they are beat pretty hard for the money. Finding stuff for them is a pain and they have been "customized" by the military. I rebuilt mine and found a new block for less than boring the old block. 1200 is not a good deal.

I have been doing that military thing for just over 18 yrs now and I now how things get beat. The thing about this motor that I like so much is the size, it is smaller than the engine I have now with almost twice the hp. I do think the price is high but everything else I have been finding is at least a grand or really beat and sometimes both.

There are other things besides the dewatering device. The pistons have milled flats under the pins and run very rich for some reason. They were also salt water motors. Caveat Emptor!
