I recently acquired a new to me 1999 Evinrude 6hp single cylinder long shaft four stroke kicker motor. I was just wondering where I could find more information about this motor, as I like to educate myself about the products I buy. There doesn’t seem to be many resources online about this specific engine that I could find.
One thing I was wondering is who actually makes this engine? Tohatsu made the newer Evinrude four strokes and Suzuki made a Johnson 6hp four stroke at one point. I’m just curious if this one here that I just bought is acutually made by OMC or if it’s a rebranded Suzuki/Tohatsu/something else.
Also, after taking this motor on a test run, I have found that it starts super easily, seems to run great, but the only issue I’ve come across with it is that when you put it in reverse while it’s running it’s hard to get it back out of reverse and into neutral. If I turn the engine off, spin the prop by hand, it comes out of reverse fine but it doesn’t want to while it’s running. It goes in and out of forward perfect, it goes into reverse fine, and operates normally while in reverse. Just doesn’t want to come out of reverse while the engine is running. Any thoughts?
