I am fairly new to boat maintenance but know a little. I noticed last weekend that my motor was not shooting a stream of water out of the exhaust. Im assuming that its the water pump and impeller. Any suggestions of what it is? Easy fix? Thanks again for the replies.

Welcome aboard :D
How long was it runnign without any water shooting? Look for an obstruction in the pee hole... If not, then water pump/impeller. Its relatively basic

when you take off the lower unit check the rubber of the impeller ..at the ends of the vanes are round "bobbles" if these are worn out of round then replace it ..or if is stiff ..pee hole yes can get blocked .

Re: 1999 Force 40 not streaming water

Thanks again for the replies. My only issue now is where to find the correct impeller kit. The hp is not available on the page to select which kit it goes from 9hp up to some others but no 40hp. I assume that one of them should work but not sure which. Here are the specs on my engine tag.

Serial Number 0E3605887
1999
40 ELPT
Max RPM: 5250
HP:40
LB:187
KW:30
KG:85
Mercury Marine
Brunswick Corp
Fond DU LAC, WI 54935

Anyways I know some of that isn't needed but if you could help me find the right kit I would be much appreciative :)

(also just thought of this...its been pretty chilly here in the mtns of nc .... maybe the cold temp has caused the impeller issues. ... )

Re: 1999 Force 40 not streaming water

Changed the impeller. I hooked up to the hose but....it was running out the sides so Im not sure if I should just take it out for a quick spin on the lake to see if its fixed. Im not even sure its suppose to shoot water. I know that there is quite a bit of water that flows out of the prop. Water still just drips from the cowl exhaust ...So now im thinking ok...either something is clogged...or not enough RPMS and need to get in water to test....or maybe its suppose to just drip and the main flow comes out of the prop. ...any ideas?

Like I mentioned in your other post, I don't think you should be seeing any stream shooting out.

Re: 1999 Force 40 not streaming water

i dont believe that all of these motor stream water from the relief holes... i have an 85 force and a 125 force and both of them just mist a little water out the exhaust relief holes when im running wide open... very very little water comes out of mine any other time. i would suggest getting a good temp guage and take it on the water and watch your temp if it doesnt get very high just go with it... im not sure if the 40 hp has a tell tale but if it doesnt you should be able to install one... there is a sticky in the top of the forum that shows you how to install one... see if it applies to yours thats the easiest way to tell. I wouldnt be concerned if it wasnt spraying out the relief holes, just my opinion.

also muffs is a bad way to test an impeller the only sure fire way is to back it into the water... leave it hooked to the trailer if you need to, you just need to submerge it to get a good flow of water.
