1999 Merc 90HP Warning Module ??

I have recently bought a 17'CC with a 1999 Merc 90HP outboard. SN is: 90ELPTO 06867879. I get no self test beeps when I turn key on and since I just did some cooling system stuff I would like to ensure the warning system is operating properly. (cheapie boat, no gauges)

I bought a factory service manual from local dealer but I am not sure it is right manual. My manual clearly shows a module in the system. My manual is 1996 vintage and is for SN 0D283222 and above, do I have right manual? Here is another silly question, I have looked around pretty well on engine and cannot find said module. Which makes me wonder if I have one....in searching this site it seems some of the newer 2 strokes got rid of the warning module? I have 12V with key on at horn and when I ground the tan wire @ horn it sounds. It got late so I didn't try to ground the over temp sensor yet. If I do have a hidden module is this one from iboats the right part: Mercury Oil Warning Module - CDI 144-4857-16 Oil Warning Module
Part # 144-4857-16 ?

I grounded the temp sensor wire tonight and alarm sounded. So providing the sensor itself is OK at least I have that warning system. I am now thinking that I do not have the module, therefore no self test with key on , but hopefully somebody will chime in with confirmation.

I've got a 1998 115. The engine does not have a module, and of course I don't get a self test beep.

I have the factory manual. In the back of the manual it clearly shows the warning module and states that a test beep should sound. In the front on the manual it has a schematic that with out doubt shows that no warning module is present.

I can only assume that there was a cross over and things got mixed up for a time.

For what it's worth, if your engine is like mine, there is no rotation sensor on the oil pump. Without the rotation sensor, there is no real benefit of having a module.

I'll chime in here, having just gone through this. My 1998 60 triple appears to have no warning module either, although when I ground the temp sensor unit, I get a beep.

I'd be relieved if anybody could shed some light on why this engine doesn't have a warning module? Everything I've read (including a manual for a 1997 and prior motor) shows that they have warning modules.

although when I ground the temp sensor unit, I get a beep.

The temp and low oil warning still works w/o the module. Grounding the sensor simply completes the circuit and the horn sounds continuously.

The module has the "intelligence" to beep in patterns to tell you if it's sounding because of temp or low oil. I think it's continuous for temp and intermittent for low oil, but I can't remember for sure.

So, as I mentioned earlier, no big deal. It's not tough to figure out which reason the horn is sounding for once it goes off.

Engines that have a rotation sensor on the oil pump are a whole different ball game. Now a module is required to compare engine speed to the speed of the pump rotation and determine if an alarm is needed.

MercGuy is CORRECT!!!!!

Not all units have the module.

Suspect the bean counters didn't want to spend the money to put it on all of them.

Great, Thanks for the info guys. I will stop searching the engine each night with flashlight looking for the "missing" warning module. My neighbors must think I am idiot. :)
