I just recently purchased my first boat. The motor was a used 1999 115 with 50 hours. It was very clean and appeared to be in great shape. Talking things over with the previous owner, it sounded as if he got is serviced on a regular once a year basis by professionals. While the owner tried to start the engine (no gas to the bulb), I could hear that the engine itself had good compression and sounded very "crisp" for lack of a better term. Fuel stablizer was added to the gas during storage.

Here is my questions: Even with fuel stablizers, how long does gas keep? Should I flush the gas tank? With this few hours, I wonder how old some of the gas is.

Also, engine oil is injected at the engine. Should that oil be drained as well? How long does it keep before breaking down?

Further more, I am open to any ideas or suggestions as to other things that should be done in order to keep the motor in tip-top shape.

thanks,

Re: 1999 yamaha 115

6 years and fifty hours is normally neglected.
follow some advice, dispose of all the fuel. replace all the filters. have the boat checked by a competent tech and insist on at least a 1 hour or so sea trial. I would at a minimum drain the engine oil tank, bleed the oil pump and change the remote oil tank filter. its not so much an oil breakdown than the antiwear solids will settle out and create a sludge.
98 and 99 motors had defective water pumps. ( my opinion) no one ever admitted it but all failed. seams the white plastic hubs would not bond to the rubber impellers. the service part is the old black plastic. so a water pump change is in order.
if the motor was ever in saltwater a set of t-stats and a pressure valve grommet as well. I would change them all just cause they are old. also change the fuel pump. they go bad from age as well and can destroy a motor. most of this is maint under the hourly OR calander maint whichever occurs first. dont go strictly by hours. its either OR and whichever occurs first.
