2.3L volvo engine/aq131?

need a distributor for a buddy. timing belt went out, he changed that, we played with the timing on the water to try and set it by ear but the boat wouldn't hardly plane out. not sure what the problem is. told him to take it in.

finally he did, they pulled the distributor and said it was broke, they want a ton of money for one...anyone know where to find one for a reasonable price?

not sure what's broke on it yet..maybe we can fix it..

what should i know about these motors? how do you time it properly?

I had the same problem with mine. I actually went out and bought an automotive one for $50. However I ended up not using it because it is not marine rated, and yes there is a difference. The local Volvo automotive jobber shop said it was OK to use the automotive one, but really it is not. Non marine rated can = KABOOM. Wasted $50, but better safe than sorry. I have seen them on e-bay for around $100, which is what I paid for my marine one. I bought mine from a guy locally. If you cannot find one, send me a pm and I can see if he has another one.

Another point, you do not set timing by ear. Buy a timing light and set it to spec. The consequences of incorrect timing (too far advanced) can mean that you will be buying a new motor sooner than later.

I don't know if that motor uses the same bosch distrubuter as the AQ120, but if it does This should work. I put the kit in my distributor and I'm very happy with it. You can email the guy and ask. He seems to know boats (he knew that the kit would fit my distributor).

I do not think that distributor is the same. The 2.3 litre has a gear drive. Also make sure that the distributor you buy is marine rated. The one posted I believe is not.

anyhow, like i stated this is my buddies boat, wasn't my idea to set it by ear.

so set it to 10 degrees?

i checked ebay the other day and came up dry. if anyone can help me out i'd appreciate it. so definitely a marine grade one, how many years did they use the aq131? what other engines share the same disty?

Send me a pm. I can give you the number of the guy whom I bought mine from. He is in Vancouver Island. I believe you set the timing to 6 degrees BTDC. Check your manual to be sure.

I have an AQ 131A, best thing I ever did was the quick $40 electronic conversion kit mad by Hot Spark. My timing is set to 6 degrees BTDC. The old points and condenser was always needing attention.
