Boat was running fine one day. Low speed, WOT, reverse and at idle speed on a reasonably smooth lake.
Next day boat started out fine, left launch at idle speed, increased speed to half throttle as the water was very rough. Lots of boats, big boats and tour boats pushing up big wakes and converging big wakes. Fun sometimes but not so when the motor is iffy and we are in the mood for a nice leisurely boat ride.
Entered the main channel and went along at 1/2 to 3/4 throttle headed up river.
20 minutes later Pulled in at Rock Island light to consult chart. Pulled back out and advanced throttle to 1/4 and engine began to stumble. Pulled throttle back and OK. Tried again and stumble. Advanced to 1/2 and OK.
Went back down river for about 15 minutes at between 1/2 to 3/4 with no issue. Stopped near launch and brought it to idle, in forward gear. No problem. Advanced to 1/4 throttle and stumbled to the point to where it almost quit. Pulled back to idle OK, advanced to 1/2 throttle and OK. Decided that going out on the river on a poker run day might not have been the best idea and brought her in.
The only difference between the 2 days is the lake was smooth, the river was really rough, 2 to 3 foot wakes, and I had just put in 10 gallons of 91 no ethanol.
The oil pressure and engine temp were good and we had 3/4 tank of fuel.
I now just pulled the filter on the carb and there were a few specks of crud, very small and probably less than a dozen.
Last year, when we bought the boat used, we had a problem where the motor would stumble and quit at any throttle setting after running for 1/2 hour or so and so we pumped the tank to remove water and crud and that seemed to solve that trouble.
We have no other fuel filter.
Should I pull the carb and clean it up? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
