I recently purchased a 2 horse 1983 evenrude. Took it out for a test run, after dumping tank new gas mixture and a bit of sea foam. Runs very well. I did some minor adjustments on both idle mixture and high end knobs that stick out front of unit. While adjusting high end I leaned it out a bit and motor really took off. So, I richened it back up to slow it down and it runs fine. Is this the right proceedure? I beleive it's rich enough so motor dont burn and plugs dont foul.

Adjust the high speed knob to obtain maximum RPM. Turning the knob back (rich) will hamper performance, fuel consumption and foul plugs faster.

My 2¢ :)

Agree with Old Jarhead, but adjust for max rpm UNDER LOAD ONLY.

ok I'll lean it back out under load to max rpm. just side question is can you run it to lean? I didnt want it to burn itself out. I ask that because I was under the impression you can over lean them out for high rpm thus burning motor?

Good point JB. Under load.

lewkster. You could set the high speed adjustment to a too lean setting but you'd notice the engine running rough at speed.

Make the max RPM adjustment then continue to lean the adjustment (half a turn or less should do it) and you'll know what too lean feels, sounds and runs like. Oh yeah, don't forget to turn back to the correct setting. :) :) :)
