Re: 2 or 4 stroke.

Looks like a perfect application for a nice 2 stroke JohnnyRude 25 electric start, pnut. They have been the standard for 14' tinnys for 50 years.

On the other hand a late model Honda 25 or 30 would be nice, economical, clean, quiet, fairly light state of the art power.

If you want maximum value for minimum bux, find a good, post-'64 JohnnyRude 25 or 30.

If you can stand the cost, a new Honda 30.

Good luck. :)

Just some thoughts:: Most of the 4 stroke motors are fine motors and as stated are clean, quiet and
get good MPG.But there are just too many moving parts that will require both routine adjustment and repair over time. And then there is the weight issue.
We are talking 6 moving parts on a 2 cylinder 2 stroke compared to over 20 on a 4 stroke.
I think Evinrude is building an Etec 30 hp 2 stroke That meets all inviromental requirements.
And there are other companies working on this type of 2 stroke as well.

i will agree with you about the weight issue. but i ahve check all the outboard complanies and none make 2 stroke 25 hp motors (i could be mistaken)but i didnt see any. second i not worried about more moving parts beaking down. yr car has a lot more moving parts and still runs everyday 7 days a week. in the long run maybe like 7+ years from now things will wear and tear. which is something that will happen no matter what, 2 stroke or 4.

so far i found that honda, Tohatsu, and mercury have 4 stroke 25 hp motors that weight in at about 70-72 kg. compared to johnson or suzuki what weight in at over 90 kg.

has anyone had experience with honda / mercury / Tohatsu motors.

I have a 9.8 tohatsu 4stroke. They are fantastic motors. Do a little searching around here and I think you'll like what you find

pnut, please use the search button on the top of the page and you will find more than enough info on the differences between 2 and 4 strokes.
It will not only help to make you an informed boat user, it will also tell you why you should never ever compare a car engine with a boat engine.

It all boils down to what you want to spend. Both will do a good job for what you want I would say.
Good Luck with what you decide. Tim

I second JB get a carburated 25 Johnson 2 stroke. You should have no problem finding a good used one a couple of years old. Anything simular in a Mercury will be good too.

I have a 20 HP Honda 4 stroke (rope start) on a 14 ft Lund. It has plenty of power. I looked at the 25 HP Honda 4 stroke too, but there was a significant weight and price difference.
