Finally I have a working engine that will bolt right up and take the place of my problem'd Thunderbolt 850/canadian. This TB850 loved the garden hose , but was afraid of the lake water and looked like it was just taken off the showroom floor. I put too much money into her and she didn't respect me.
Got my taxes back real early this year and low and behold a '74 850 appears before my eyes like an act of God. It was sitting on a 69 Firberform tri-hull and that was sitting on a easy loader tandem trailor. I showed up at the guys house and we hit it off real good. You know when you can feel someone is being honest about something, this was the feeling I got. His explaination of the boats history and that he wanted the money for some hunting stuff, etc etc and all made sense, fit together like a truthful person should sound. Well, he sold me the entire package for $375.00. The boat was trashed, floor was rotted beyond what I ever seen and it deserved 5 gallons of gas and a match. But all the chrome was great, it had a fish/depth finder (score), all controls, electric hydraulic engine trim motor and hose lines(score again) and some perfect classic boat lights that will make my 64 Glastron smile.
Now the motor: The boat sat in his backyard 3 years and it was not because of an engine problem, it was clear it was a P.O.S. boat problem. We removed plugs, squirted oil in cylinders, gently bringing her back to life. He kept saying that the motor was great and started fast and no problems. (I was thinking, please be telling the truth, lol.) We finished hand cranking and then connected battery. I want to add here gang, it's 25 degrees her in WA. and nothing cranks less then 10-20 times to wake up. He went to the control box, shoved a screw driver in the key hole (lost the keys) and turn that baby maybe 5 times and VAROoom, right to idle and leveled off on choke. 1 minute later we dropped choke off and with hose attached, I rolled the prop into forward and reverse, gently in low RPMs. Hmm nothing was going wrong with this engine, something must be wrong, I know it. I have been shafted twice on the first motor purchase, and mechanic also got his dip into the grab bag too. This guy who was selling the old boat was just a honest person, like myself. I always give a person a chance to prove himself honest and he turned out to be at the top. He also helped me remove the engine with his tools and labor, 2 friends came to help also. He said take all the items you need from the boat if you dont want to haul the old girl away, He will find someone to take the bones for free, Awesome! thats perfect. I dont' need 2 boats, 3 cars parked in street for 2 people. We finish the deal and I return tomorrow for the chrome goodies, electronics, cables and controls.
Why was I feeling so good...this never happens. I was just getting used to the feeling of being BS'd, then handing out money, and still had an anchor parked in the street. Not this time...hang in there all, there are still some honest ones out there. I have proof with a tight sweet complete working motor. I am going to replace impeller, plugs, lines and hoses, fluids, etc...and give her a shiny new dress with fresh paint. I'm set.. had to share that you all and hope I didn't put you to sleep.
