Welcome to iboats :D

Depends on where you are located? Area close to salt water? Has it been rebuild ? What about what new items have been installed? Impellar? Head gasket? That is really way too high for that motor. The older pre-84 models are not worth much and for that price I would expect a boat and trailer attached.

Probably not what you wanted to hear but it's my opinion.

I agree with Bob....bit too high.

As the summer progresses the prices will start to drop.

When you do decide to purchase a motor, be sure to do the basic inspections as a minimum before handing over any money. Compression test, check the lu for water intrusion, ask about maintainence, check for a recent overheat, etc...

Water tests are always the best if available.

A clean 15hp can fetch that much and more for that year.
A 9.9 is worth more around $400. Some places in the country that motor could sell for $500-$600.
Check your local Craigslist and see what guys are asking.

I agree it's a bit high. Over all condition and appearance should be a factor in pricing it. Is it in mint condition or does it look like it has spent much of it's life rolling around in the back of a pick up? How does the power head look? Clean as a whistle and well lubed. In the end you need to check compression, spark and the gear oil for water contamination. They are in general very good motors and parts are easy to obtain. Best of luck. Rick.

For that price, it should be in great shape, no corrosion, and a fresh water engine, as a used saltwater engine will have to have been expertly maintained to look good at this point in time. Look at the pull rope to see how frayed it is for an indication of how much it was used. Even though many here are good at fixing these wonderful compacts, if you are wanting a runner, and not a project, it's worth it to pay a little more for a nice engine.
At a minimum, you should try to find one that has has a recent lower unit service(new gear oil and impeller) and tune up(new plugs) and that starts and runs well. If the owner just quit using it and stored it, then you will most likely need to have the items above done, and possibly clean the carb. The 1980 9.9 /15 engines had a habit of blowing out the Power Pack ignition module, especially if pulled over with the spark plug wires dissconnected, which damages the power pack.
