Geez I hate to bug you guys again but I still could use some advice, back to the lower unit for the Yamaha c40elrq. Testing the unit for shifting before reinstalling yesterday I ran into a problem. Neutral is fine, free and no noise, forward the prop locks in one direction and ratchets the other but when shift to reverse the prop locks both direction and will not turn. Put some force on the drive shaft still seemed locked and wouldn’t turn. Tried pushing the shift rod down further but it didn’t move much nor did it change anything. Tried reverse again today before disassembling and found that now it is still locked both directions but with a bit of force it would at least turn the driveshaft. Turns it in both directions. Yesterday I loosen the carrier jam nut to pull the prop shaft and that made the difference. Still not right but seems loosening freed the reverse gear to at least turn. As I mentioned before my goal was to replace the driveshaft bearings so the prop shaft assembly was not disassembled.
Any thoughts on what to look for?
