2 Yellow Wires on New Stator. ?????

I purchased a new stator for my boat which has 2 solid colored yellow wires.

The previous one had a solid yellow & yellow w/ gray stripe.

How do i know which way the wires go??

Boat ran fine the first time I took it to the lake.

After that, sometimes it would have spark. other times it wouldn't

I was told that replacing the pulse pack, coil, ignition safety circuit assembly and stator would fix the problem, at the same time reducing the chance of frying something because i do not have test equipment for these components.

so. i have replaced them all.

Is there a simple test I could preform on my old stator to see if it's good. The OHM meter reads zero resistance just like the new one.

The yellow wires can go either way. Makes no difference.

Actually, if you have a real sensitive ohmmeter, it will read something less than one ohm, but not zero. Not all meters are capable of doing that though. Also, should be infinity when testing yellow wire to ground. This isn't rocket science.

Dave..... The stator on that model is strictly for the charging syatem and has nothing to do with the ignition system.

You can check to see if the charging system by.........

Engine not running. Connect a volt meter across the battery terminals and make a note of the voltage reading Now start and as you increase the rpms slightly, the voltage should increase somewhat. If it does not, check the rectifier.

The rectifier will be an approximately 1" round component about 1" high, with a triangular base, attached with two screws, and it has three wires... a red wire, a yellow wire, and a yellow/gray wire. The yellow/gray wire may also be plain yellow. Test as follows.

Remove the rectifier wires from the terminal block. Using a ohm meter, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the rectifier base (ground), then one by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, then the red wire (some rectifiers may also have a fourth yellow/blue wire. If so connect to that also). Now, reverse the ohm meter leads and check those same wires again. You should get a reading in one direction, and none at all in the other direction.

Now, connect the black lead of the ohm meter to the red wire. One by one, connect the red lead of the ohm meter to the yellow, yellow/gray, and if present, the yellow/blue wire. Then reverse the leads, checking the wires again. Once more, you should get a reading in one direction and none in the other.

Note that the reading obtained from the red rectifier wire will be lower then what is obtained from the other wires.

Any deviation from the "Reading", "No Reading" as above indicates a faulty rectifier. Note that a rectifier will not tolerate reverse polarity. Simply touching the battery with the cables in the reverse order or hooking up a battery charger backwards will blow the diodes in the rectifier assy immediately.

Now, to test the pulsepack applifier (powerpack) on that model.......

On the older Battery Capacitance Discharge ignition systems (1968-1972), the electric starter reaches a point, even with a top notch battery, whereas the starter will draw excess voltage/current/whatever which results in a voltage drop to the pulsepack. The cure is to purchase a diode which is capable of handling 12 volts and installing it between the starter terminal of the starter solenoid (NOT the battery cable terminal) and the wiring terminal that supplies voltage to the pulsepack.

The diode must be installed so that the current flows from the starter terminal of the solenoid to the pulsepack... NOT vice versa. When that diode is installed in this manner, when the key is turned to the start position, the voltage that is applied to the starter is also applied directly to the pulsepack via the diode effectively eliminating the voltage drop and energizing the pulsepack with the required voltage needed for its proper operation.

Purchase a small 12v bulb at your local automotive parts store (the 12v bulb is to look like a flashlight bulb, not a headlight bulb). Solder two wires to that bulb, one to the side of the bulb (ground), and the other to the positive point. You might use a bulb of a somewhat lower voltage to obtain a brighter glow... just a suggestion.

Remove the spark plugs. With the key in the on position, make sure that you have 12v going to the pack at the terminal block (purple wire). Now, connect the ground wire from the bulb to any powerhead ground. Connect the wire from the positive point of that bulb to the powerpack wire that is connected to the coil wire on the terminal board (blue wire).

Crank the engine and observe that bulb closely (CLOSELY!). If that bulb glows even the slightest bit, the powerpack is okay. It may be a very dim glow... just so it glows! If it doesn't glow, the pack has failed.

Keep in mind, that type powerpack (Battery Capacitance Discharge) demands a top notch battery of at least 70 amp hours. Any less will, in time, cause powerpack failure.

Let us know what you find.

I should have posted my question here before spending $900 on parts.

I was told to replace all ignition related parts in order to get spark if i did not have the proper testing equipment.

I have replaced the stator, coil, pulse pack, and ignition safety switch and only have spark when i bypass the ignition safety switch. i have posted a question regarding this in order to see if i should run the boat without it

My battery is 90 AH (brand new)

That safety circuit.... if you're speaking of the "Clipper Circuit", OMC issued a bulletin which recommended that it be removed. If you haven't already, do so and reroute the 12 volts so that the voltage is applied to the proper powerpack (pulsepack) lead ONLY when the ignition key is in the ON or START position.
