How are your bearings holding up?

I have these tires and rims,but the rubber is getting old. They do have the load rating I need,but the small dia. has me questioning the longevity of the bearings. I'll be roading this rig quite a bit.

Brian,
I had that size tire on my tandem trailer that carries my 24' JC Tritoon with a 470 Mercruiser I/O. I replaced tires several times, burned up a couple of hubs and bearings. It seamed that if I went anywhere that the trip was more than 50-75 miles one way I wolud have some sort of incident. Finally tore out my axels and springs and replace them because of spacing and replaced the tires with P175x13" tires and wheels and no problems since.

Just my $0.02 worth.

I also have that size their very commonon toons and I often put 500 miles to a trip with no problems. Just get the right load rating. You will never go fast enough to over spin the bearings and in my case I own a 1988 trailer with the original bearings.

B= 4 ply,910
C= 6 ply,1100
D= 8 ply,1320
E= 10 ply, 1650

Hawker,
What kind of weight are you hauling? My tritoon, with I/O weighes 4400# boat alone unloaded.

That was my concern,over spinning the bearings. I have a lead foot and a deisel. I'm use to towing at the flow of traffic. Don't want to back them up with the toon if I can help it. I've even found an F rated tire in that size. The seller won't give me a manufactures date,so I figure they're old rubber.

I'll be going clear through my trailer this winter. Not opposed to new axles. I'd have to go wider or higher to get 13's on it. Torsions would be nice.

Brian,
My change out cost me about $750.00 and that was with 5 new tires and wheels. It required a small amount of welding the front and back hangers for the springs. The center hanger stayed the same. The change raised my trailer height about 5 inches. If you decide to do something like I did you will learn boat trailer axles are generally shorter than standard. I don't know what part of the country you are in but I am in the Houston area and have a good selection of trailer parts suppliers. Husky trailer, who I used had tandem axle kits that had everything needed except the tires and even had the axle length made to my spec at no additional charge.

Hope this helps,

Larry

Larry did you buy the toon new and was the trailer part of the deal?

BrianMc what is the max weight of the trailer it should have a sticker near the front?

Sticker is wore off the shorelander trailer,so couldn't tell you. It's a tandem with these E rated tires. I might be able to tell a little more by pulling the bearings,and see what size they are.

Larry, I widened this toon out to 102" from 94". So, I could probably use a wider axle. I haven't measured the length of these axles yet. There's a redneck trailer supply within an hour of me. 5" is quite a bit higher,but for peace-of-mind I guess I could get my feet wet cranking it on the trailer.

I like these beefy lil tires,just wonder if they'll hold up even if the bearings do. A pot hole of any size would be hard on things. They call for around 90 lbs. of air. Not much cushion in a bias tire aired up like that.

jergeo,
My trailer is pretty beefy and was made by JC Pontoons back in '84.

Brian, my feet don't get wet, but I only put the trailer 1/2 way in when loading and I drive the boat onto the trailer. By putting the trailer 1/2 way in, the front of the toons line up straight and keeps the rear from drifting to the left or right. As for those Beefy lil tires, I got tired of replacing them. But my boat is 4400+ pounds.
