Hey guys, my buddy and I just picked up a 1981 Dusky C.C.. It came with an 1987 evinrude 175 VRO, and a trailer in mint condition. I could'nt pass up the opportunity so we bought it... $650.. Got the motor running a few weeks ago, did the basic tune up - plugs, gear lube, water pump, ect. I decided not to use the VRO system and mix the gas and oil straight in the gas tank, so i know the motor is getting what it's supposed to.

From what i can tell, the transoms soild. I can sit and bounce around on the lower end of the motor without the transom budging. But what i don't like is that the guy put marine plywood over the exisiting floor because of a "few soft spots".

I plan on completely gutting and restoring the boat after the summer, due to the fact i'd like to take the boat out once or twice. My concern is with the stringers; the through holes for the cabels (running from console to engine) have the wood exposed, but the wood is solid as a rock to touch. When i tap the stringers with a screw driver, they seem soild.

I guess it comes down to drilling a few holes into the sides of the stringers to check for further rot? Is this a good approach?

I just don't want to do more harm then good if i get a chance to take the boat out a few times this summer. Let me know what you guys think, thanks alot.

Yep drill some holes and see what comes out. Patch 'em back up with 5200. It does not sound like running it is going to do any damage whatsoever. That new floor is probably hiding a rotted floor and wet foam so you may see some performance gains from all the weight shaving a restore will give you. Sounds like a heck of a deal with that motor on it.

It looks like a nice boat. I may actually be getting a Dusky myself. As long as the floor isnt too bad your got a heck of a deal. That trailer is worth the price of admission.

Re: 20' Dusky C.C

I got the motor all apart, relpaced the port side head( due to stripped spark plug thread), all gaskets on the port side, plugs, and impeller.. what a pain in the *** it was to disconnect the linkage.. im sure its gona be 20 times worse trying to get it back together!

Im gona demo the boat in the water this monday, hopefully as is well..

I made a little mistake when i took the coils off of the head.. i lost track of which coil went to each cyclinder (port side only, cylinders 2,4 6).. lucky i took pictures before hand and may be able to use those to distinguish coils.. can anybody tell me if there is a number on each pack that is assaigned to each specific cylinder????? if not, where can i find the firing order of the motor, 1987 evinrude 175??

thanks guys

Post your engine questions on the iBoats engine forum. I KNOW you'll get your answer. What a DEAL on that boat and Motor. The Boat Police should arrest you for STEALING!!!!!!! Good luck on your restore!
