20 hp stuck in forward...

I was out fishing over may long weekend and everything was running fine, for those that recall I had a high speed issue with the outboard, turned out the gasket in between the floatbowl and the top of the carb was missing. (the small washer looking one, anyways, runs back like a top now.) and throughout the day it started not wanting to go into reverse. Well eventually, it went into forward and won't get out of gear. The shifter is a lot looser now, it shakes around when idling, etc. and when I move it through F-N-R, it's not clicking on anything. Unfortunately I'm back to work now, so I wont be able to troubleshoot until I go back to the cabin. What I'm wondering is if it could be in the shaft where there is that race track plate with two screws, maybe the bolts came loose on the shifting rod? if that makes any sense at all? Appreciate all the help.

Sounds like either the shift linkage broke under the powerhead OR the upper or lower shift rod pulled loose from the brass shift connector.

Is the brass shift connector the part in the middle of the shaft?
