20 pole? maybe not...

I bought the S.S. White HG502 tach: 0-8000 RPM 4-10-12-20 pole. I'm not sure what the right setting is for my 1969 55 HP because it seems awful low, the "barely running" RPM shows like 400, is this possible?

I assume there's a way to figure out how many actual poles there are by the year...

thanks in advance!

Re: 20 pole? maybe not...

Success! Searching on this forum and the Teleflex document on their 20 pole only tach indicates that 1968-1974 MagnaPower I motors use 12 not 20 :) Woohoo, changed the setting and it "looks" right to me! Can anyone confirm?

This instrument will not operate with Magnepower 1 ignition or those
later models with 12 pole alternator/stator. Contact your Force/Mercury
dealer fo assistance.
This instrumen is designed to operate only on 12 volt DC system Chrysler/
Force outboard engines with a 20 pole alternator/stator.
