I have a 96 Evinrude. About every two - three months the starter doesnt want to engage. Does it need to be replaced? Any thoughts on a rebuilt vs new. Is this something that can be done without taking it into the shop?

Brad,

When this happens, just what does it do ?Spin slow,Just not come up to engage the flywheel ?Also what have you been doing to get it going ?

We had some trouble with local rebuilds,so we go to ARCO or OEM depending on price.Generally a good shop locally can do a great job for under $100.00

DHP

DHP,
The starter spins however it doesnt engage the fly wheel. The first time it happened it was 80 deg. and I tapped the starter with a screw driver. The second time it happened 2 months later and 20 deg. I moved the pin up and the spring up then I released both. It took several attempts to get it going but once it "caught" I didnt have any problems the rest of the day.

Brad
Use a solvent to clean the starter shaft. Then apply a LIGHT coating of LIGHT oil. Doing this once or twice a season should eliminate the issue.
Good luck

Often this type of problem is the result of crud on the cable connectors or a bad cable. Clean or replace. Starters need to draw lots of amps.
