200 hp prop shaft bearing housing moves

my prop shaft bearing housing moves up/down and side to side inside the gear case. It doesn't move much - maybe 1/16", but the movement is noticable by pushing the prop around. The bearing housing is held in with just two retaining clips/bolts. Is this movement normal? The unit pressure tests OK and does not leak.

There should be no movement. I would drain the unit, and pull that housing to see what's going on.

I agree with R.Johonson. There should be no vertical or horizontal movemnet of the prop shaft.

Walleye, some movment of the propshaft may be allowable, but movement of the bearing housing is scary.Halftime:Do you have any history on this motor?I suspect a major underwater lower unit, rock engagement<br />DHP

DHP- my history with this motor is very limited - I bought it in December '03 and have put about 50 hours on it since then. No leaks and no unusual noise. Am I right that the housing is a tight slip fit and only requires the two retaining clips to hold it in place with no movement? Is there anything else that would hold it tighter? What would allow the movement? an out of shape gear case? Any idas?

That bearing housing is a tight fit in the gearcase, there should be no movement. As I said before, I would pull it out, and have a look. The prop shaft is also a very close fit in it's roller bearings, there are two bearing's in the carrier located at front, and back of the carrier, there should be no play. That prop shaft can't just swing around in an arc.
