I have read so many mixed reviews on this outboard I don't know what to think? I might be purchasing a boat with one of these on it... I would think since it is a 2000 and stil running strong all the kinks would of been worked out? does anybody have any experience with outboard? If so, what are your thoughts? Thanks for any replies!

imho, i would pass unless it is an extremely good deal, and the motor has had all the programming upgrades. also check for a service dealer that works on them, they require special equipment, not all shops have it. they are not owner friendly for service.

The ficht name has been tagged as a problem engine. A number of factory mods were issued for these engines in the 97-99 timeframe when they were produced under the OMC label. Most of the problem engines were the 60 degree block engine family. These mods uncluded oil pumps, vibration dampers, heads, software-some major items. Your engine is a 90 degree block and was not as problematic as the 60 degree ones. In the 2000 model year Bombardier took over and brought improved engineering and quality control back, along with a Bombardier warranty. As tashasdaddy indicated, I'd call a local dealer and have him check to see if there are any open mods that should be applied (or were applied) by a dealer-to the engine. They can also tell you what warranty (if any) had been done during the warranty period. Before purchase, I'd probably ask the owner to take to the local Bombardier dealer and have the on-board computer interogated for number of hours in each rpm range, faults and do a compression check, check lower unit oil, etc.

Thats the thing it is a very good deal.. It's a 2000 Stratos 21SS Extreme with the 225 Ficht for $10,000. I am buying it from a freind of the family and I know he would not knowingly sell me a piece of crap...
Tashdaddy, I see your from Jacksonville, so am I! I am buying the boat in St. Augustine... Do you know of any local certified evinrude mechanics in the area I could take the boat to? If I wrote down the serial number could I get info on the motors history from a certified dealer?

Edmsapmgr, what do you mean by open mods?

Thans for the help guys!

I think any dealer could run the serial and tell what has been done to the engine.Sounds like a good deal if the engine checks out.Good luck!

Billy, Jeff's outboards, is one of 2 best omc service centers in Jax, 904 387 9779,, 2204 Lakeshore Blvd, behind the boat ramp on San Juan Ave. i buy my parts there, and he straightens up my messes when i can't. i talked to him, to make sure he serviced them, he said give him a call to set up bringing it in.

Bombardier keeps records of each engine-especially warranty, recalls and mods. As they improve the product, they may issues recalls, or mods for engines in certain serial number ranges. The dealer can check your engine by serial # to see if any recalls or mods have been done, and if others are recommended but not yet completed on the engine. Your product will perform best for the longest period of time if all the recalls have been done, along with any update mods. For instance, it is possible that there is a software upgrade avail for your engine's computer. Sometimes upgrades are available, but not issued as a recall and may be performed when you have your engine in for routine service. You need to ask all these questions-sounds like the previously mentioned dealer is the right one to talk to.
