Thanks to all who posted on solenoids.
Very helpful.
However, wanted to get more detail for my solenoid situation.
To test solenoid, jump hot leg from battery (big red lug on solenoid) to small hot lug on front of solenoid. Correct?
My solenoid has two small lugs - one black one orange w/ red stripe.
And of course the two large red or hot lugs.
I have jumped across the solenoid and starter engages.
So trying to determine if solenoid or helm switch.

Re: 2000 225 Johnson Solenoid Question

Sounds like you got it right. Connect the small lug with orange/red (should be yellow/red I think, must have faded a bit) to 12V (big red lug coming from battery), solenoid should engage and starter should spin.

FYI, a nother thing to check - the big red lug from battery also has a smaller red wire leading to the main harness plug - that wire has an in-line fuse holder with a 20-amp fuse. If that fuse blows, turning the key will have no effect; in fact, you'll have no power at the keyswitch at all; choke won't work, gauges won't work.......

If I recall choke and gauges were working but will double check.
