I've had this back to the boat mechanic 3 times now. The motor sat for 4 years, bought it used, sent it to mechanic to have above-floor 12-gal gas tank flushed and told him to do the general cleaning and checkup such as rebuild carbs, change the gas filter, check lower unit, change the plugs, the general going over due to not knowing if it was properly fogged down 4 years ago. Mechanic said that the compression was very good on the motor. He said it looked like it was actually under 50 hours of useage. After all this work is done, I took the boat out, it's hard to start and has rough idle. I took it back to the mechanic. Now he takes the top carb out, checks it, cleans it again, says there is a little bit of dirt in it, take it home and try it again. Now we go out for our second try. Still hard to start and when I shift from the starting mode pulling the handle towards me to let it rest in the transmission mode, I count to 3 and the motor dies. So now I have to quickly, once I get it started in idle, pull it back to engage the transmission at the center and quickly get it into gear or it will die. And now I have a new problem on this second try --Once I get a chance to run the boat for about 15 minutes, stopping and starting a couple of times, I take it out to the open part of the lake to open the motor up and let it run at full throttle. The first time I can run it open and it runs like a breeze, wide open 5000 rpm. I can go for a couple of minutes and then it's time to stop and fish. If I let it sit for a half hour while fishing and try to move the boat, now I'm only running on one cylinder at 2200RPM with the throllte pushed all the way forward to wide open, I guess since I only have 1/2 power.
Now I take it back to the mechanic a third time. This time he says he doesn't like the way the wires look on the stator and the power pack. He tells me it is an electrical problem and changes the stator, power pack and coil. He sattes that the compression is still good. Now the third time on the lake it still does the same, rough idle, loses 1/2 power after sitting for a half hour.
Any ideas on what the problem could be? I'm frustraded and don't know what to do next!!!.. Thanks!
