I have a 2000 50hp johnson that idles rough and runs rough at low r's. I don't use a oil tank for VRO, I mix.

With the VRO bypassed/plugged is this harming the oil pump over time?

My other Q is, do you think the rough idle is caused by not using the VRO and it being plugged or is it just in need of a carb adjustment?

The motor runs like a champ otherwise. I am planning on doing some trolling next year and it seems hard on the motor to run it at low rpm's. Any help greatly appreciated.

Any time you modify a motor as you did, you risk consequences. You're risking a few. I'd hook it back up and use it the way it was designed. Why did you disconnect it? Listening to uninformed people spreading unfounded rumors? Sorry, but anybody that says to premix ANY oil injected motor is giving BAD advice!

And remember CK, you dont have a VRO system. Its a straight ratio oil injection.

Check the pulse hose from the VRO pump to crankcase, the starter rubs a hole in the hose. You will have to remove the starter to excess the hose. If the hose has a hole in it, replace the hose, and grind a notch in the base of the starter to clear the hose. The engine should run fine with premix or with the VRO, most of these engine were suppiled with plugs to block the oil side of the pump.

I will take issue with disabling the VRO on this engine. Most service departments will tell you to do just that should there be a VRO failure. That VRO pump has been updated many times over the years and is quite reliable. However, if it does fail and you did not destroy the engine because of it, it can be disabled. My fishing rig runs a '95 Evinrude that has been premixed for the last six years or so and it gets run hard for long distances. It actually performs better than with the VRO. Your engine probably has a 6700 RPM rev limiter on it. 5500 - 5700 RPM will not hurt it. Just use a quality oil and fresh fuel. As for rough idle, that is a two cylinder engine so it will dance a little at idle. You might want to have the low speed idle mixture checked by your dealer. That engine will troll all day without a hiccup.
