Re: 2000 evinrude 225 ficth, what is the best all around prop

i checked where the motor is mounted and it is all the way down, there are 4 hole option's where it can go. diameter=15 1/4. when you say 1 hole can change alot do you mean RPM's or how the boat rides please explain.

Also something i noticed was the merc prop was alot bigger then the prop that was on there.

thanks for all the help
Chris

You should be able to raise that to the moon.!!! Sit back that boat is gonna fly when you are done.

Raising the motor will allow less off the gearcase to run in the water. Less in the water means less drag and more speed and rpm.

It will change how the boat handles, For the better! until you go too high. Just go one hole at a time and keep an eye on the water pressure.

Re: 2000 evinrude 225 ficth, what is the best all around prop

I'm really not going for all out speed but just to get my RPM's where they need to be and better MPG. Was thinking going to the 3erd hole, i didn't think one hole would be worth wild but i guess i will give it a try.

Whats the best way to do it? I was thinking just use a cherry picker and hook it up to the motor? are there motor lift point's? any TQ spec's?

the most i have seen my water psi gauge go to is 20psi is that normal?

Chris

Well the best way is a cherry picker and you use a 3 bolt flywheel puller on the flywheel. But I have done it by removing the top bolts and then put a jack and a piece of wood pushing up on the bottem of the tilt trim housing. Then loosen the lower bolts jack it up and put the top bolts back in. Remember to seal the lower bolts again. I would try 1 hole at a time.

20 is ok if the pump is old change it 20 is getting close. Pump is not that hard nor expensive

You also need to post accurate speed as well. Perhaps from a gps. A pitot speedo is not accurate unless calibrated to a known gauge.

A paddlewheel on a transducer is ok as long as you always read the speed off that from test to test.
I wasn't all that interested in speed either but when you raise the motor and try different props you would be amazed what you can change. Remember if you increase the effeciency you will get more speed as well as increased mpg. Just so long you don't run wot all the time cause speed is contagious :D

ok sounds good, when you say to seal the lower bolts what do you mean by that? the lower bolts look they are inside the transom bracket.

So you cannot see the head of the lower bolts or the nuts on the outside?

Let us know, Chris...generally we raise 1 hole at a time and test, but see how it goes.

I was thinking about going 1 hole but seeing I didn't have any luck with the 19" prop I am dying to see more RPM'S. Had a question can you base moving the motor up&down from looking where the prop sits compared to the bottom of the hull?

Re: 2000 evinrude 225 ficth, what is the best all around prop

You're fine at what you did. Like Kenny said, we generally move one hole at a time going up. The reason being that we could find that one hole up was better, in the long run, than two although two is OK.

Anyway, run it where you have it now. With that much diameter you should be OK. I'm guessing we'll go up from there.

As far as what we go by, you can go by the AV plate or the propshaft. Doesnt matter. You cant change the distance between the two. Recreational guys generally go by the AV plate vs the bottom and performance guys usually go by the centerline of the propshaft vs the bottom.

Re: 2000 evinrude 225 ficth, what is the best all around prop

So I got a chance to try the boat yesterday and I really don't think it was worth it. I maybe got another 50-100 rpms's but the boat didn't really ride to great I was jumping out the water real bad and it was only 2-3. also broke a trim tap.
Now my only options are if the tach is off, or something is wrong with the motor.I just got the cable to check out the codes that are stored maybe that will help me.

Any other help would be great guys.

Chris

if i didn't gain any rpm by going up 2 holes you think it might by going down 1 hole?
how does that work.

Re: 2000 evinrude 225 ficth, what is the best all around prop

No but you said it did not handle that well. You usually go up until it adversely affects either water pressure prop bite or handling then go down just enough

I don't think that raising the motor would make the boat jump out of the water it might have been the conditions not the boat. Try it in calmer conditions then raise it again and retest if it gets worse go back it costs you nothing.

You also said it wasn't that great but you gained 50 to 100 rpm. When trying to setup a motor it is a game of inches. Small increases like that are what we are looking for. Add a couple together and you get a substansial increase in performance and economy.
Keep going you are on the right track.
You will very rarely see a gain of a few hundred rpm unless you are way off to begin with
