The starter on my 2000 Johnson 70 is spinning but is not moving up to the flywheel. If you wedge something underneath it pops up just fine. Also it works sometimes but most of the time it needs a little help. My question is: Do I need a new starter or is it something in the starter? Also how much should a new starter cost me?
thanks,
Garrett

Re: 2000 Johnson 70 Starter Issues

most common cause: undercharged battery. The starter has to spin up to speed rapidly, so that inertia will drive the bendix gear up its threaded shaft to the flywheel.

also, add a couple drops light oil to the bendix threads. I use 3in1 oil.
