2000 VP 4.3 PWTR - Steer Actuator Leak / Removal Question

Hello all,

So I read up on a few posts about how to remove the steering actuator and decided I was educated enough to accomplish this task in order to replace the seals inside of it. All was going extremely smooth... too smooth in fact, until I got to the 15/16" main bolt that holds the actuator on. This bolt does not want to come off, I have put some elbow grease into it and it does not want to move. I am very tempted to get my impact wrench and new air compressor out, however I have broken a lot of things in the past doing things like that lol so I decided asking you guys would be the best option on this one! Below are pictures of the steering actuator as well as the plaque that is on it with part numbers etc.

I'm assuming you have removed the split pin or has someone replaced it with a roll pin?

I have literally felt around multiple times but have been unable to locate a pin that is holding that bolt in like the below picture demonstrates... Is there any other setup that could be on this steering actuator? I don't want to destroy anything by using my air compressor and impact wrench, but unless anyone has any other advise I see no other option. Thanks for the help in advance!

Alright so for anyone who runs into the same problem, mine had 2 threaded bolts - 1 on top and 1 on bottom. Top one came out with my impact wrench and the bottom came out with a 1/2" wrench with a cheater bar.

Only thing I would have changed is to take off the far left steering cable before taking everything else off... But I will deal with that tomorrow after work. Good night everyone, hope this helps.

So quick question for you guys, I got the steering cable unbolted from the steering actuator however the steering ram seems to be secured in there. Can anyone tell me how to get that out so I can get this thing to a hydraulic shop for a rebuild?

I'm guessing here, but I remember someone telling me years ago that the flats on the tube opposite the cable entry must be vertical. I wonder if it is a lock? Or is clevis pin No.7 significant?

In Augoose 2nd post he says "4) Remove the split pin and connecting pin connecting the steering cable to the cylinder actuator"

You could try getting a message to him to clear things up.

Got the steering cylinder out and called all around town to hydraulic shops to see if they could help me out. Finally found PirTek Hose Company in Altamonte Springs, FL. Mark found the right seals and put them on for me, took about 5 minutes to take apart, 1 day to get the right seals in, and completed within 24 hours. Got it all completed for $38.xx will install tonight or tomorrow night and let you all know how it goes!!!
