2000 Yam 150 EFI: Bad starter or weak battery?

Hello Again,<br />I have a 2001 Yam 150 EFI. The other day I could not start it. The starter spun, but the gear did not 'pop up' to engage the fly wheel. The starter is the kind without a soleoid. I had charged the batteries, and even tried jumping it, so I think the batteries are ok, but they could be low again. The gear isn't frozen, I can spin it up by hand.<br /><br />Has anyone run into this before? Any ideas on what is holding up by season?<br /><br />Thanks

Something that is often overlooked from time to time,even by experienced boaters is the killswitch that the safety lanyard is attached to.<br />Or you could try the FAQ section at the top of the page.

hello<br /> double check all your battery connections and terminals. do you have a voltmeter and the knowledge to use it?<br /> good luck and keep posting

Thanks for your replies.<br /><br />Battery was weak. I had them both load tested and neither would hold a charge. New battery turns it right over, and she runs nice. I had been charging dead batteries. That won't do it.

I HAVE A SIMILAR PROBLEM. I HAVE A 115HP 4-STROKE YAMAHA OUTBOARD. RECENTLY, AS I COME OUT OF TROLLING SPEED AND BEGIN TO ACCELERATE A KILL SWITCH SOUND BEGINS (OR SOME OTHER HIGH PITCH BUZZING SOUND)AND THEN MY ENGINE EVENTUALLY CUTS OUT IF I DONT GO BACK TO TROLLING SPEED. I CAN GET IT TO WORK IF I TIILIT THE ENGINE JUST RIGHT BUT IT FEEL LIKE IT HAS TO BESOMETHING SIMPLE. DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY SUGGESTIONS? THANKS FOR YOUR TIME
