I noticed this problem a couple of months back. It could always be solved by using the tilt switch on the outboard itself. As soon as it I freed it with that switch, it would tilt by using the switch on the throttle.

It had been a few weeks since I used the boat and now it won't tilt with either switch. I know it is getting power since I can hear it making contact and trying to move. I have twin 200's on the boat and the starboard works fine.

I've tried to locate the the click that comes from under the engine cover. I've had someone trigger the switch and listen for the click. But I can't locate the relay that controls the trim motor.

Thanks

the relay assy is under the electic panal on the stbd side of the motor. remove the 2 phillips scres and the fuse box cover and you will see it. test it carefully cause its about 400 dollars new.
good luck and keep posting
PS we also had a lot of trim motor problems with those. if you need a motor and wont tell anyone I said so the motor for the fastrack jonnyrudes are about 3oo dollars cheaper and so is the pump body assy :)

Guess what , if the relay is making good contact, which you can check with an ohm or continuity checker, the problem may be stuck brushes in the tilt motor located on the transom between the mounys on the motor. You can access the brushes by either removing the complete motor, or just take the top cover off, if you take the motor off the pump body, you will lose hydraulic fluid. I fixed my neighbor's 150 this way, Gutshot in Raleigh

rodbolt, based on my description of how the tilt switch on the throttle would work once I used the switch on the motor, would you diagnose this as a motor problem?

It almost seems like it was stuck and once freed, everything worked normally. Is it possible that the contacts are making contact which is why I hear the click, but they still need to be cleaned?

I wasn't clear in my first post, but once I get to the relay assy, I really don't know what to do from there.

remove the large 10 ga blue and the large 10 ga green wires. place the blue wire on the positve post {red} and the green wire on the ground post. the motor should trim up. it will spark some. reverse the leads and it should go down. you really need to use the service manual to test the relay. while its off place your meter leads black on the green post and red on the blue post and when you hit trim up switch you should read battery voltage. reverse the leads and retest for down. all the relay does is apply a positive voltage on one lead and a negative on the other depending on which contacts close. you have the newer style showa pump assy with a plasic motor housing I think. those motors had water intrusion problems. if you dont have a firm backgrond with electricity and DC circuits you MUST buy and study the manual. yamaha electrical parts are expensive. the pump motor from yamaha is almost 600 dollars.
good luck and keep posting

OK rodbolt, I did just as you said in your previous post and everything worked exactly as you said. The motor trimmed up when putting the blue and green on the positive and negative and down when reversed. Also had battery voltage when testing with the blue and green disconnected.

Now, what does this indicate is wrong?

Thanks for the assistance, heck, I felt like I knew something for a few minutes there while following your instruction.

hello
if it clicks with the switch and it works if you take the motor wires directly to pos and negative then either you lost the 12v power to the relay or the relay is bad.
the test for the relay is rather long on that one and they do go bad. if your trim motor works and the 12vis at the relay, odds are its a relay.
to bypass all the switches unplug the blue and green wires from the relay and take them to 12v+ one at a time. green goes down and blue goes up.the relay can be bench tested so when ya go to the dealer take it with you and have it tested .
good luck and keep us posted
