I know I know - I need to buy a manual, and I do intend to.....lol.

I decided to pull my lower unit before winter storage, so I put the controls in fwd then dropped the unit. But for the life of me I can't understand why the unit has to be in fwd to drop the unit. There is a union with a torx shape that would definitly slide off of the rod no matter what direction it is turned. Its just a slide torx union - like a socket on a bolt head.

So why does the unit have to be in fwd to remove the lower unit?

Thanks in advance!

What is your engine s/n? Your manual should be available on line.

No real "need" but it makes it easier to reinstall the L/U by turning the flywheel or the prop by hand to align the splines on the shift rod. I don't bother as I invariably move the shift rod or the prop while working on the L/U, putting it in neutral anyway. LOL On my 150 I can get to the shaft when the L/U is almost back in place and I move it back in alignment with a pair of needlenose pliers. You won't mess anything up by leaving it in neutral.

It doesn't, you do it because you want the unit in gear when you reinstall it, with it in gear you can turn the prop to cause driveshaft to turn to align crankshaft splines....

Awesome! Thanks guys!

At least I know I am not going crazy! I was more worried I was missing the obvious.

I think I am going to get the seal redone and 2 areas on the skag / horizontal fin repaired now that it is off season.

UFM82 - I am also in Cincinnati - any advice on a great place to go (great quality and not going to soak me too bad)?

Thanks again!!

I'm a horrible person to ask because I do my own work. Unless it is something that requires welding; I am not equipped for that. Almost anything else I do although I do have to ask questions from time to time. I can't afford to have someone else do it and I am also a terrible customer. I trust no one with my stuff...
