A good auto mech. with right tools and the proper manual shouldn't have a problem.

As for testing your stator I dodn't have a clue, somebody here might! That's what you'll need that manual for, and the right test equipment.

Here's a link with alot of info, some that may help. the (DVA) voltage and resistance charts only go up to 1999, Again you'll need that manual. IGN. Troubleshooting help

If I come up with anything else I'll pass it along
Good Luck ;)

Dom, while your at it have you tried swapping the coil/s from one motor to the other, they do go bad.

Have you got just the one coil or two? its unlikely that both would go at the same time but??

EDIT: forget I said that about one or two, diagram was misleading me

Re: 2001 FICHT 150HP; Cranks but won’t start

I tested the stator with a meter and it's showing 41 volts so that can't be the problen. My uncle looked at it for a little bit today but it started raining so we quit. We swapped the Crank Position sensors between motors but that didn't help. Out of the 4 coils (2 are double) none of them have any spark. He thinks it might be something with the magnets on the flywheel?

I think I'm just going to try to bring it to a certified Evinrude mechanic. The nearest mechanic is about 16 miles from me (on water) following the coastline. Think I'll be okay with one motor? Do I keep the dead motor in the water or raise it up?

raise it so water pressure does not force water back up the exhaust and into the motor, compounding your problem. i am not familiar enough with the FICT ign to advise ya much but seems there is to much poking and hoping going on. if no codes are set its a mechanical failure such as a bad connection someplace. could be inside the ECU. the computer will monitor all the sensors and set a code if one is out of range. it usually wont monitor primary output voltage or stator input voltages.
a quick way to test the starter circuit is with a voltmeter. between the starter terminal and ground you should have at least 10.5V while cranking. between the positive term and the starter term you should show less than 1.0 V while cranking and less then .7V from the neg term to the block while cranking. anything else and you found your problem.
by the way that test works on all electric start outboards and cars

96TL,

Better let a KNOWLEDGABLE tech check out the system. The computer box (EMM) can have a failed ignition circuit and not show any codes. Many times this happens if there has been a history of overheats either with the motor or more often in the EMM.

The factory has an EMM exchange program if it is the "black box".

The EMM is fine. I swapped it with my other motor.

Yesterday I swapped capacitors and bingo, she started right up. The bad news is when I put the bad capacitor in my other motor she started up as well. I went there this morning and they both started okay. Weird huh? Should I replace that suspicious capacitor? Maybe it has a bad connection inside?

Well its not uncommon for electrical parts to behave erratically before they quit entirely, are you sure it wasn't just a loose connection?

The connections seemed pretty tight. I'm gonna order a new one and just replace it before it quits out on me. Let's hope that was the problem. Thanks for the help guys. I'll keep you updated as to what happens. This is a great forum.

Dom

Hi Guy's , i know this a old Post , But , I am experiencing the exact same problem , Was this issue ever repaired !! My mechanics are going through the same headaches , No other problems with my motors , they have just over 300 hrs , they have run perfectly , I hope this is something can be fixed , my mechanic is coming to an end , he has done all the checks as per this thread . He now just added 2 new 800 amp cranking batteries , changed the stator , see what happens today , it is weird , we tried swapping starters , power supplies , etc... the trouble motor spins slower than the other , pulled the leg off to check for possible friction on th shaft , any abnormalities , all good , all grounds good !! What the **** is going on there !! info would be appreciated !!
