I have a 2001 115hp Johnson that when you start it does not idle. HIgh speed is fine but will not idle unless I put my hand over the upper carb.

2001 Johnson 115 HP idleing problem

Raise the idle up a bit. When was the last time in was at WOT? I had simular issues with stalling on my 140 evinrude and turned the idle screw adjustment up a bit. It did the trick.

Re: 2001 Johnson 115 HP idleing problem

The Motor has been sitting awhile but was winterized. There are no slow speed jets on these carbs. Last weekend had it out ran great wot. I am going to clean the carbs the only thing that still has me wondering is why when I put my hand on the number 2 Carb it starts to run fine.

Found the problem today. One of my worst thoughts but it is what it is as I say, Compression test on all cylinders 35 pounds in #2.Thanks for all your help.

All may not be lost. Head gasket? I have seen posts on this site that recommend a decarb to perhaps free a stuck ring, etc. Seems I remember it solved the problem a few times. Might be worth a shot. good luck whatever

Took the Head off and found the o-ring to be bad. The cylinder wall is also scord. Replace the oring and tried pressure check went up to 50 lbs but still not enough.
My question is does anyone know what the flat rate hours would be to replace a piston and rings on the one cylinder. All the others have 150lb on test.

Re: 2001 Johnson 115 HP idleing problem

it will be neccesary to tear the whole ph apart.

probbebly rebore the cylinders or at least hone.

and install the new pistons etc etc.

depending on the condition of the cylinders and pistons and bearings, a rebuild if you do it yourself will cost you between 800 to 1500 , depents on the parts you need.
pistons go for about 100 dollars
main bearings are not cheap either.

if you want a certified mech rebuild it it wil cost you at least double.

but first find out why you have low compression and how did it happen.
lean? detonation,preignition,
crankcase leak?
carburator clogged jet?
running rich,
ex carbon build up?
tstsat open?
overpropped? low rpm?
timing out of spec
etc etc

find this out first before tearing the block down,
and if you tear it down do it step by step document what you see.
so the puzzle wil all fit together.

This same thing just recently happened to our 2001 Johnson 115hp. Took it to a marine mech. he said it dropped a cylinder. $2800.00 later it will be fixed. Do you think he will be able to tell me what caused the problem if I did not ask this question up front?
