I am looking at a closeout package of a 2001 Lowe 165 angler with a 2001 40 HP Johnson.

Search has indicated that this motor was mfg around the OMC to Bombardier transfer (bankruptcy quality, etc.), but not much else on this particular model.

Is this a good motor? They are pricing it at $4k.

Also, would this motor be adequate for a 16.5 ft aluminum boat. the boat is rated to 70hp, but this is a package deal (lots of other stuff included too).

Any input is welcome.

Hi, Marty. Happy Easter!

Is that $4K for the package or just the engine?

Does the package include a trailer?

You can check iBoats (see above) and other sites for price comparisons. $4K sounds a bit high for a leftover engine alone, but nice for a package.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

Happy Easter to you too J.B.

This is my first boat, so I'm trying to get the most for the money.

The total package is $10,155 and includes (all new):

2001 angler 165S -full gauges
2001 Johnson 40HP 2 stroke
2001 Yacht club single trailer
2001 Minnkota 50# Troller
Bimini top
mooring cover
spare tire and mount
Humminbird FF
Troller battery
charge battery
trailer load guides
anchor, paddle, fire ext.,9 gal fuel tank, throw cusion, 4 life jackets,
extra Lowe pedestal seat.

Seems like a deal, and I will be buying locally, but my biggest concern is the motor reliability and how it can move the boat with up to 4 people on board.

I am also pricing models from Cabelas, which are newer models with 50HP Mercs classics, but I will still have to get the add-ons, plus the dealer is 250mi away.

Anyone?

Those Johnson two-strokes have been around a long time and are well-regarded for their simplicity and value. Don't think that you could make a mistake by buying one at a competitive price.

Think most of the late OMC complaints were with the bigger Fitch engines.

Have dealer remove starter to insure the starter is not rubbing the VRO pulse hose. You grind a notch in the starter end cap.

Thanks for the info Clanton.

Is there anything else to keep an eye on to ensure this motor holds up?

The wheels are in motion to get this boat/motor.
