That is detonation (caused by old fuel probably), see how you can see the ring, that is what is called the squish band area of the piston. This is where the compression is the highest. I would look into getting reman p/h.

The marks look very much like a bearing may have come apart and the rollers (needles) were imbedding themselves in the piston/head. Seen this before.

just talked to the person who was running the boat when it died. he stated that he heard a loud knocking noise then it died. they restarted it and the noise was louder and then stopped.

That cyl looks worse than it actually is. Most of what you see is alum from the piston smeared on the walls. Careful cleaning with muratic acid will remove the alum, allowing you to see what actual damage is to the wall.

This was not a water flow cooling problem, you don't see this kind of heat in a center cyl unless you have a detonation, often caused by any of a number of things.

Clean the cyl, it should clean up with an 020 bore.

Like Fazt said, send out the ECU and injectors.

Also double check timing and throttle link.

Re: 2001 mercury 150 EFI will not turn a full revolution

today i was told by the boat owner he filled up the tank with the cheapest fuel at a automobile gas station prior to this event. if that can cause this kind of damage on this particular engine what is the lowest grade fuel that should be used on this?

ph is on a bench now. the tear down starts sat (i found a source for pistons)...
