I have a 2001 Mercury 60 Bigfoot on my pontoon. It has had a problem for quite some time, but it is usually intermittant. About a month and a half ago, I drained the fuel and cleaned the tank, replaced the plugs, and the fuel filter. I also ran some seafoam in the gas to try and clean out the carbs a little. Ran perfect the first time out. The next time, it ran like crap. It was a little hard to start without opening the throttle up. Once started, it ran up to about 3500 rpms or so and nothing more at full throttle. I ran it across the lake like that for about 2 hours and finally it took off like a boost of nitrous kikced in. It also appeared to be using way too much oil.
I changed the fuel filter again and replaced a broken fuel line with a hole in it and took it out again. This time I took it out, same problem. It never straightened out though. Still using way too much oil.
I took it to the shop and the guy said that there was carbon built up in the system and my problem was coming from using penzoil 2 cycle oil. Don't see how that was causing my problems, but we took him at his word. He replaced the plugs and fogged the motor. I brought it home and disconnected the oil injection to take that out of the equation. I now mix my oil.
I took it out again. This time, from idle to full throttle, it took of strong, but bogged down to about 3500-4000 rpms after just 3 or 4 seconds. Never straightened out. I brought it home and started looking at the fuel system again and found that the fuel line I replaced had a kink where it made a 90 degree turn. I bought a molded hose and replaced that one.
I took it out again. Does the same thing except now when I go full throttle, it comes out of the hole good and holds it for about 15-20 seconds before bogging down to 3500-4000. While it was running at about 4000, i squeezed the primer bulb about 6 or 7 times with no change. Seams like it is getting better, but still screwed up. Also, if I back it down to idle speed for a minute or so and then back to full throttle, same thing. I can rev it in neutral fine. sometimes it starts easy and quick, but other times, I have to keep turning it over and open the throttle before it will start.
I took it back to the mech again. He puts in on the Dyno and simulates the problem. He checks spark and says that all cylinders are geting a spark, but he thinks the stator might be going bad. He didn't have the machine to check the stator, but recommended that I take the boat to the dealer to have it checked. He is dead set against this being a fuel or carb problem.
Sorry this is so long, but any help is appreciated. Is it too big of a project to rebuild the carbs myself or should that be done by a mech. I've done car carbs, but not sure if they are similar or not.
