Looking to sell my Yamaha 8hp and downsize to a 2016 6hp. I had always assumed it was a short shaft o/b. Then looking at it closer what do ya know it's a long shaft based on the "L" in the model #. OK that's all fine, however when I go to measure the shaft length from transom bracket to cavitation plate it measures a solid 23". I was kinda surprised that it's closer to a XL shaft std than L shaft std length.
Are Yamaha's typically that much longer than the std 20" in their long shaft outboards?

Shaft lenghts along lower leg measurements can vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. That's why when sitting on same transom 2 different brand OB's with same "supposed " lenghts will perform different on a water trial.

That is normal to have a 3" difference most manufacturers are the same way nothing to worry about.
