2002 johnson 115 2 stroke starts then dies, heavy smoke.

Hello,
I am new to using forums and am hoping for some advice. My father and I have always had issues getting the motor to start and stay running in the beginning of the season. Once we get it to run, it seems to work good throughout the season, though seems to smoke more than it should. This season, we cannot get it to run for more than about 10 seconds. It will turn over and run on high throttle but smokes a lot and dies. We are having difficulty finding a mechanic and are hoping for some pointers on how we can try to diagnose and fix it ourselves. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you so much for the quick response. Sorry I'm an amateur at this. Yes it is stored with fuel. I was not aware of the electric primer so I tried it out today. When the red lever is pointed down, the engine will start for a moment on high throttle but die quickly. With the lever up, we can get it to run with very heavy smoke and it will idle for 15 seconds or so and die. We did push in the key while cranking with the lever in both positions. We are located in omaha nebraska. Thanks again for the advice and patience with me being inexperienced with this.

The red lever should be in line with the valve body to run.----When you turn that lever it opens the valve and sprays fuel into the engine.----So have the red lever inline with valve body.----Push key in and hold it in while cranking the motor for cold start.----You should find an owners manual.----It will save you a lot of frustration,.-----That electric primer valve is a wonderful item.----Using it correctly , the motor starts up quick and easy every time !

Are you using the oil injection pump? If so, they will pump a lot of extra oil, if the gasoline line has an air leak.

Sorry , I missed that location first time. --Drain carburetors as they may have too much oil in them.-----What oil are you using.----Is the vent clear on the oil tank.-----replace the cap on oil tank or leave it cracked open.
