Hello! I recently purchased a Wellcraft 22WA with a 2 stroke 2002 Johnson V6 150 - I believe it is an ocean pro but the decals have been removed. It is carbbed and not a FICHT. The boat was neglected, but in otherwise good condition.

I do not trust the oiler system. I am aware the late model VRO/OMS are more reliable, but at 24 years old the less things that can break… the better. I own several 2 strokes and delete and premix all of them.

I understand the electrical aspect and have no issue bypassing the alarms, but I was hoping someone could chime in and reassure me that there will be no negative consequences for plugging the hose barb where the oil is delivered? I have attached a photo of the barb I’m referring to. It seems it is feeding a pump - will the lack of oil burn it up? If so, could this have an effect on the fuel system?

There is plenty of info for the process on the OG VRO motors, but not much for the 2002’s.

TYIA!

Thank you, sir! I appreciate the responses and reassurance.
I should add, that it's much more "convenient" to use the oil bottle for that fuel consuming lady and it's very reliable. The oil diaphragm is bathed in oil so it stays soft and supple, it's the fuel side that dies (easy replacement) and it floods the motor causing little to no harm.

Lots of opinions on this one. I believe that's what Racerone was trying to tell you.

I owned that same motor for many years on a 20 ft Boston Whaler Revenge.

Happy boating.

I've heard very good things about the VRO2/OMS system and I agree that it is far more convenient. My concern is the lack of ability to monitor the oil level, relying on the 24 year old alarm to function correctly (on a boat that has clearly not been well taken care of), and my lack of understanding of the system.

Obviously, I could familiarize myself with the system and learn to trust it... but I have enough work to do on her as is :). I suppose it comes down to a lack of desire to remedy my ignorance when there is a simpler alternative.

Additionally, I premix my smaller skiff and am comforted by the consistency of reaching for the oil jug EVERY time I visit the pump regardless of which boat is hooked to the truck.

I have a 1997 200hp Ocean Pro (second power head) with the original "System Check" system still in place that has functioned flawlessly the past 28 years ;)

Very thirsty........have absolutely no problem monitoring the oil level when I'm burning half of a 3 gallon tank of oil every outing .
