I'm having problems with my engine. Symptoms originally included total engine cutout when coming off full throttle together with sometimes a cutout when trying to throttle up. There is a misfire on the centre cylinder which is pronounced at 2000rpm but clears above about 3000 rpm. This misfire is only under load conditions. The engine revs up and down beautifully on no load.

The cutting out coming off full throttle was cleared mostly by a thorough carb clean, but the misfire persists despite everything. I have had 2 dealers working on it. Neither can determine the problem. They have stripped the carbs several times, tried a different petrol source to eliminate contaminated fuel, swapped plugs, HT leads and coils, and done compression checks, the problem remains with the middle cylinder. The spark appears to be fine. One dealer said to replace the carbs, (£1000) he has drilled out the factory plugs to adjust the mixture as a last resort prior to that, but I cant believe a device with no moving parts except the accelerator pump will affect running at a constant throttle setting. He now has the plugs totally black, so the mixture is certainly not leaning under load, (its in a tank). Any ideas anybody?

Chris

Hi, Chris.

Welcome to iboats. :)

Each brand of outboard has, or shares, a forum for getting diagnosis and repair advice. This forum is for discussions not involving engine troubles.

I will move this to the Merc Troubles forum.

Good luck. :)
