i have a 2002 ox66 250 yamaha (sx250txra) that normally would idle around 1100 rpms for 2-4 minutes when first fired up, then idle down to 500-600 rpms. the last two times i took it out it will not idle down until i take the boat up on plane for a while. after i get the engine warm it's fine for the rest of the day. what should i check first? the boat just had a full service in October. thanks

you should check the actual engine temp. most likly a t-stat is bad. usually caused by excessive maint or an anal attention to the maint schedule.

Rodbolt: What is excessive maintenance? You've got me wondering what that means.

John

john
a touch of sacasm
usually a motor fails due to a maint scedule mentality. the old if it aint broke dont fix it. on a high performance machine it may kill it.
tokinred
check the t-stats. if the engine is actually warming up then check ign timing.if timing is locked at 7* btdc then its time to test the water temp sensor. if the computer doesnt see the change in voltage it wont know that the engine is warm so it will keep the engine in cold run mode.
usually motors that have computers require maint before it breaks or you can do it when a piston detotnates.

rodbolt, you were right as usual. the t-stats in the engine were both stuck open. my question is this: i take my boat in to the "yamaha dealer" here in st. pete, fl for all scheduled service per the manufacturer. the t-stats were due to be replaced in august when the boat last went in. the t-stats i pulled out of there were NOT that way from 88 hours of use. i paid nearly $1000 for that service (i have twins). now i'm scared as to what else they forgot to do. how the hell do i know if they're doing it right other than stand over them while they do the work????? may be time to go back to school. tokinred

tokinred
about the oly way is to carefully observe the parts list and the technicians write up. some places only write 100 hour service, I always write up the procedure. helps me out later as well. some just give it a curyous inspection. if it runs its ok. I go as far as checking hull electrics, panal switches and auto/manual bilge pumps. I also tend to follow the calander as well as hourly schedule. some I will do the annual cooling system maint everyother year instead of every year, depends on how much the boat is used.
so dealerships are like lawyers and Drs. ya dont know what ya got until its done.

rodbolt, i'm a lawyer and you are so right. if anyone out there knows of a good yamaha mechanic in the tampa bay area, i'm all ears. incidentally the aug. service was a 200hr/yearly and that was all they wrote on the $972 bill. just upsets me that i paid that kinda money and ended up replacing my t-stats 6 days before my yearly vacation that involves by boat and a lot of beer. tokinred

I dont even check them just toss them
but I work mostly on out of town owners that only have a limited amount of fishing time and they dont care about maint costs just that the dang things goes when they get here.
if during the course of maint I find a bad pump, bad float switch ,inoperative lights or wipers I fix it. if I have to stop and call for each item or reley on customer instructions I eleminate them from my customer base.
the funny ones are the ones that drop off a motor that was run until it just died and leave instructions to call if more than 100 dollars. I usually wont even pop the hood.

This does not sound like the rodbolt I have come to know. I thought he was the poor man's friend.

Re: 2002 ox66 250 won't idle down after warmup

adam1
were it up to me id fix them fof free.
however its a matter of in this salt pond if the water pump makes 6 or 7 years and fails and pops a head gasket nothing comes apart. t-stat bolts all braek, cover bolts break, ya have to torch all the lower unit bolts off. I have seen v6 jonny and mercs make ten years with low use and the drive shafts are so stuck in the crank shafts you cannot pull it apart with a frame straightning machine. so some times I wont touch them. I do explain why. its a matter of telling the customer that on a motor that old its to much time. I do have one or two independants that I may refer them to that bill at 35 per hour and do decent work most times, if they stay sober.
but I am in the boat repair business, most the dealers I contract for charge 75-85 per hour. if the boat is badly neglected I dont want to touch it partly due to the liability and partly due to usually by then its multiple problems.
