Hi guys, i just bought a used 2002 15hp 2 stroke short shaft. I bought it without really seeing it run in water. It supposedly had low hours on it but was used in salt water only. It has a little rust on the exposed bolts here and there. Anyways, the guy dry fired it for me (not in water) and let it idle for a couple of seconds before i wanted it shut down. So anyways i bought it, got it home, and started looking a little closer at the motor. Here's my main problem: i can't get the shifter mechanism in reverse. It will click into forward without a problem, go back to neutral, but won't go into reverse when i push the handle towards the motor. Is there a trick to this?

you need to adjust the clutch dog, at the back in the middle of the lower unit .....

Thanks for the help deejaycee. You've helped me on all of my newb threads. I thought i would say that i spoke to the previous owner and he said that it is normal and told me to slightly turn the prop bit by bit and then try reverse. Sure enough it went in. He said it's just a matter of the gears not meshing when the motor isn't running and noted it's perfect when the motor is running. I'm happy now, but i'm also going to check the clutch dog too after i buy a manual from our favourite egay site. THanks again.
