The impeller should be pre-lubricated with a glycerin get for the absolute best results.

I am guessing most people don't actually wear out the raw water impeller with normal use. If it's damaged it's a lack of water.

While your around that area of the engine look for rusty pulleys. Especially the flywheel pulley where the back of the serpentine rides or the PS pump pulley.

I had the flywheel pulley sandblasted and powder coated. The PS pulley I just replaced but may get the old one powder coated. But they cannot powder coat the area of the PS pulley where the belt rides as powder coating is too thick.

The nice thing about replacing them is that Barr includes everything you need….however if you have the left overs any good hardware store shouid be able to match them up….

The pump housing was to blame on this one. I have never run the engine without a good water supply. The housing on that pump (not sure whether its a bronze casting or how they made it) was made was faulty. The housing was made such that it tore chunks off of the impeller. Lack of funds to purchase OE pump... and even not knowing how or whether it was worth rebuilding the OE pump was my mistake.... Appearance wise someone would think the Amazon pump was an OE replacement... but it is not... if you look at the pics in the earlier posts it will show the differences... really don't want to turn this into a debate thread... just sharing my findings and it seems OE is best in this case. I just wasn't aware when I jumped into the shallow end of the pool unfortunately.

Thanks for the tips on the pulleys I just replaced the PS pump and sanded and re-sprayed the pulley on that. I wanted to do the same with the original VP pulley but I didn't have time and there weren't any abrasive edges to where its worn but I am sure that will be in the next project.

The PS pulley is cheap about $28. The main flywheel pulley is around $250.

I half wonder if the raw water pump seal was leaking longer than I first thought and it sprayed water all over the flywheel and PS pulleys and caused them to rust a little.

I only noticed the leak from the raw water pump seal when I saw it slowly drip when the engine off.
