how often should i change the gear oil in my lower unit?

i changed it last night just to check it because i just bough the motor and boat.

no water just nasty looking and smelling


i let it drain really good then pushed some new oil threw is a couple times then filled and sealed.

That's a good habit to develope. Not many motor owners do it often enough. Always use new nylon washers when you re-install drain screws. Every fall is when I do mine. I've seen some lower units that had water in them and were broken by freezing temps.

Recommend a lower unit oil change every 50 hours or so. Agree with oldcatamount; checking it is better than hoping. A check is simple and the possible water drain a safe guard. Any water will come out first as it is heavier than the oil.
If you just bought the motor, you should also change the water pump impeller regardless of condition, again, so you know for certain. You don't want to take the chance it'll self-destruct in a couple hours.

one step ahead of you JDusza changed the impeller 3 days ago (it was SHOT!!!). :D

next will be sparkplugs i guess...
