Hello all,
I've been reading this forum for several years but I don't believe I've ever posted a question. Anyway, here goes. I bought a boat from craigslist and it has the 40hp 4 stroke motor. The problem is that the boat was in a storm and the dock beat the crap out of the motor. The upper and lower cowlings were broken and the motor's wiring is ripped up in several places. I really got a great deal on the boat and trailer and the guy basically threw in the motor because it was so damaged. The motor has very low hours and the guy said it ran flawlessly when the storm got it.

Here's my request. I have no idea if I'm going to try to repair the motor or if I'm just going to part it out and buy another outboard. I would really like to repair this one if I can keep the cost down to a reasonable level of $500 or so not counting the cowlings. What I need is someone with the same motor to take 3 or 4 photos of the motor with the cover off. I already have the part number for the seloc manual from iboats and will order it if I decide that the motor can be repaired without too much fuss.

So, could anyone help me out by taking a few pics under the hood of their 40 HP 4 stroke merc? I would really appreciate it.

Re: 2003 Merc 40hp 4 stroke EFI

Please disregard above message. I took it to the mechanic and he said that the best option would be to either part out the beat up motor or just take it off the boat and wait and find the same model motor with a bad power head.

I have a '97 Mariner 75 HP on my pontoon boat. He said I would be better off using that on the Fisher bass boat (75 HP max) and buying another used smaller engine for the pontoon. His reasoning was that we don't use the pontoon as much as we will the fishing boat and we usually just cruise around in the cove at low speed. He suggested looking for a 40-60 HP for the pontoon and he would swap them out for $300.

Sounds like a plan.
