I looking at a 2003 Baja Islander 212 with a Mercruiser 6.2 liter and bravo 1. Only has 80 hours. Is the 6.2 liter known to be a reliable engine as compared to the 350Mag? I seen some post with engine failures. Anybody have any experience?

if there is a motor failure it is related to lack of maintenance.

not a thing wrong with the 6.2 (377 cubic inch) motor. its a stroked 350. has much higher torque and exact same reliability as a 350.

so if there have been a failure, the motor was murdered by lack of maintenance (such as lack of winterization)

A 15 year old boat with 40 hours, less than 3 hours per year, is a warning of sorts. For me anyway.

Lack of use causes a lot of problems, mostly because issues are not fixed. I would ask for maintenance records and ask how the boat was stored.

Thanks everyone!! I have a Rinda so I will plug into the PCM to see what it has to say. Interior and haul are flawless. His price is high at 17K book is 13K but you would think the boat is 2 months old, even the engine compartment is flawless.

remember, it will need a new impeller, new bellows, etc. all the rubber parts are at the end of their life, if not past it.

those parts go off of calendar time, not use time.

I had a 1988 starcraft medallist 1601 with 3.0 Mercruiser and alpha 1. In 2012 I decided to replace the bellows for the first time, I was the original owner. They were perfect. Could have lasted another 20 years. Boat had always been used in salt water but stored inside. I will definelty check bellows but will be surprised if they need changed.

Since you did not say which model drive you have there could be a chance that you have water pump in the out drive and one on the engine. Some models are equipped with a “Y” pipe and the engine sea pump draws water through the bottom of the boat and the drive pump.

Yes he did. First line of the opening post.

There is no seawater pump in the drive, only an engine- driven pump.

My bad, the engine pump makes every thing less troublesome.
When I bought my Donzi some one had the drive pump feeding feeding the engine pump. Of course the engine pump was completely burned up. I could never find 3 of the impeller blades after removing every hose on the engine.
