Curious sir as to the reason for your questions. Did you just buy one, or contemplating the purchase?

Mark

Hi Mark.
Yes, just bought one. Noticed that "EFI" isnt on cowling.

Dealer said "no differences between 2003-2006" and checked all sources I have(forums, other mechanics, etc) re this-except one trusted master merc mechanic who wasnt avail this weekend. Did not hear of any issues-I know there is many very knowledgeable people here, is why I post.

Bought it anyway-you know how that buying bug is.
:)

If EFI isn't on the cowling, it's carbed. Which makes it fussier on clean fuel (carb passages on those engines are very thin) and varnish (running Stabil all the time or at least before a layup of a week or so seems to help).

I believe the carbed 90 4s engines were dropped in 2005.

SO not EFI but carbed. Thanks for the info!

Thats pretty pertinant change-wish Id have known that. May not have changed my buying decision, but they should have mentioned it(!). Of the gazillion dealers I talked to none ever mentioned that the EFI would be imp. to look for.

I got this motor for 5300 new 2003 noncurrent, so saved big over 2006, just hope there isnt any later regrets.

Re: 2003 mercury 90hp 4 stroke

Doing some research and raised couple Q's:

I just replaced(installed new) plastic gas tank and ran gas line with "silver" line (regular marine gas line). Read where these "silver color lines" can breakdown on inside causing buildup in carbs. Anyone know/hear of this?

Since I have this new "carbed 4-stroke" and read they are prone to clog, wondering if I should install my own fuel/water separator filter in the line and run stabil?

Re: 2003 mercury 90hp 4 stroke

i use a 40 hp 4stroke, and think its the best engine i ever had, starts easy, runs quiet, and dont use much fuel, but , i do use sea foam engine cleaner and fuel stabilizer, 2000 engine, and cant tell it from new, only drawback is it is heavier than 2 strokes, change oil once a year cheap, less than buying bcw3 all year. good luck

Re: 2003 mercury 90hp 4 stroke

Runs GREAT! Ventillation is a "non-issue" now, smooth, fast, quiet (enough),and is just a pleasure to run. Came with a 19P aluminum prop and is doing 5900 WOT.

Since the 115 is same block and same weight- it would have been nicer to have, but figure I saved some dough finding this one and am happy.

Thanks all for your input.
