2003 volvo penta 5.0gl d stalls after sitting

When starting cold no problems . After warm up ... Switching skiers or tube riders no problem ... After sitting on shore or sitting in the middle of the lake for 1/2 hour.... Starts right up but after about 50 - 100 yards it stalls just like it runs out of gas...it takes a bit of cranking the engine over but will usually start up and run fine again untill we stop for another break...never a problem if the engine is cold..ie starting the day. Things i have tried .. While sitting... Lid to engine compartment open....gas cap open...no help... Had a mechanic suggest that it may be a faulty oil pressure sender.....sending no signal to fuel pump so after using up fuel in line engine stalls.....i am told there are 2 oil senders on this engine ..one on top of the engine by the destributer....and another down by the oil filter....any idea which one to replace or any other ideas ... Thanks in advance

That might happen with a Mercruiser, but not with a Volvo, they don't use an oil pressure switch to control the pump.

Might check the fuel pump relay (next to pump) and look for corrosion on the terminals.

So you think that circit relay may just quit for a short while.....as after trying to start for awhile engine will start and run perfect till the next time we stop for a break...

It could be any number of things, here's just one possibility. Next time it doesn't start, tap on the fuel pump relay a couple times and see if it works.
Might also make a jumper wire and go between the 30 and 87 socket terminals and see if it starts. With it jumped, the pump will run all the time.

Ok thanks.......checked relay and the terminals are not corroded and are a good as new any chance anyone knows where i could find a wiring schematic of this engine ?

Thanks for your help i appreciate it...... If you have any other ideas a can try let me know .. Just seems to me it is something that is turning the fuel pump off when we restart the engine...but which sensor is doing so...that is the question !

There are no sensors that stop the fuel pump or let it run. There are diodes in the fuel pump electrical system, but diodes either work or they don't, they are not intermittent.

If not electrical, you have a fuel problem. plugged passages, air leaks in the suction side of the fuel system, water, hard to say.

I know the older fuel injected V8 GM vehicles use to use an oil pressure activated switch on the back of the intake manifold, by the distributor, to close an electrical contact in the switch to send 12V to the fuel pump, after the fuel pump relay timed out a few seconds after starting the car. Newer FI set-ups don't use this finicky scheme any longer. Get the VP manual and trace your fuel pump power source and ground source and see where it drops off. Boats can be a PITA to work on due to limited access. Be prepared to rip your rear bench seat out to get to the pump area.

Also check your distributor internals for corrosion. Could be bad spark too causing this.

By the pictures you sent me there are only 3 sensor s that could be not working properly..exhaust overheat sensor....oil pressure switch and temperature switch they are all hooked together and go to the distributor.maybe one is weak and while the boat is sitting gets to warm.. And shuts the engine down ?

They don't go to the distributor, they go to the alarm buzzer on the dash. They can not and do not affect the engine operation in any way. If one of them closes, the buzzer goes off, but the engine will keep right on running as if nothing happened.

Went back and looked at the pic you sent me and those sensors go to the 10 pin connector...and those t/sb labled sensors will just send to the buzzer on the dash !!! Temperature sender "21" also goes to that 10 pin connector could it stop the engine ?

There are no alarm switches, gauge senders, or sensors of any kind that will kill your engine.
You have either an ignition problem or a fuel related problem.

Thanks for your help ..... Will have to see if that fuel relay is faulty i guess ..as it only happens at that certain time when sitting after operating....then works perfect again....hard to troubleshoot

I used the jumper wire between 30 and 87 socket terminals last year when I had a "stall after sitting" problem. Worked like a charm on my 2003 4.3GL-C! Won't leave the dock without a jumper wire now!

Never did replace the relay. I'm gonna carry an extra one on the boat though.

I'm hoping you can bless me with the answer to your problem. Did you ever figure it out? I've been struggeling with this issue for my last 6-7 trips and it's a little frustrating. Any help you can give would be great.

ok i was lucky enought to get out on the water .....with some ideas to try from this post .....i ran the engine with all sensors hooked up and warmed it up and everything was working properly......... i unhooked the oil pressure sensor # 19 back of the intake manifold.....oilpressure guage was not working after i unhooked it.....ran the engine and stopped twice for a period of time that would usually cause the problems ... started engine after and i did not stall out ! i am going to buy a new sensor and hope that was the problem..... will keep you posted ....may not be till early july

Don mentioned several times in this thread alone that these sensors do not affect the performance of your engine in any way. They only send a signal to the gauge for your reference. Your problem is not in the oil pressure sender.
