Going to help a friend change out his water pump. We don't have the shop manual for this engine yet but I have been messing with boats and engines most of my life. Changed many pumps on my Merc OBs just none on a Yamaha. When pulling the lower unit where does the gear shifter/ throttle need to be? Anything else I should be aware of? Any help is much appreciated. Thanks.

Well this simple bakyardagin did quite well with the change out. Glad I posted here for help as I see another post. Before you pass judgement on those that do come here for help maybe we should see some of your credentials. Like most guys on the forums I am self taught from experience and a hands on type when it comes to boats and their equipment. I gather from the amount of posts you have that you are gainfully unemployed. Basically a loser that sits on his fat *** all day in front of a computer. But I am jumping to conclusions much as you did. Maybe you could also post about the boats you currently or have owned in the past. For me I started with small aluminum fishing boats with anything from a 10hp Merc on up to about 40hp Mercs. Then I moved up to a small Elgin runabout with matching Elgin 40hp engine. That was a lot of fun. Sold it. After college I bought a 1983 Astroglas Fish N Ski with an 80 hp Merc on it. That boat was and is still a lot of fun. Felt a need for more speed so I bought a 1996 Rinker 232 Captiva cuddy cabin with the 7.4L and B1 drive. Again that boat was and still is quite a bit of fun. Last year I decided I needed more room for the type of boating I've grown to enjoy so I tracked down and bought a 2000 Rinker 270 Fiesta Vee. That boat has the 350 Mag Mpi with the B3 drive on it. All maintenance and repairs on boats has been done by me. Up to this point in my life I had not had the occasion to tackle a job on a Yamaha outboard. I found this forum and asked a simple question that could have been answered much differently. Like my original post asked "was there anything else that I should be aware of", once again a simple answer mentioning the collar would have been nice. We handled the situation quite handily thank you rodbolt. Robnik1 no hijack at all.

Re: 2003 Yamaha 150 Vmax water pump.

had you asked a question about something in the service manual that you did not quite understand the answer would have been much different.
however your post about placing a yamaha in fwd gear before removing the gear case is and was simply wrong.
I am glad ya managed just dont post about now the gear case knocks at in gear idle and it most likly will.
however if it does and you do I will tell you why.
I spend a lot of time and customer money correcting issues that should have never been just because a nieghbor with a tool box wished to help.
wish I had your credentials though.

WTF...what's up Rodbolt. Been learning from and watching your posts for the past year I have been on this forum. Your reply to the OP not only made no sense at all but was rude and spiteful. Who pissed in your coffee this morning?? His post was typical of many posts I have made about my 150 TXRA that I have owned for the past year. Yeah, I got a manual, but I sure asked for and got lots of help from many here before I did.
For the poster....many here are more than willing to help. This guy is some big Yamaha service tech with a wall full of credentials and usually helpful. He can be acerbic at times, but people usually deal with it to get an answer. Few of us here do this work for a living, but he does. And you'll be sure to hear about it.
I am sure you found out that the Yamaha did not have any locking collar. It is a sliding splined shaft.
Good luck, and try not to let this guys rant keep you away. This site is normally pretty friendly with lots of knowledgeable folks on it...

yep sometimes after dealing with customers all day I type what I think.
and mostly I think any one working on an advanced motor like a HPDI without a manual and posting bad info I get the jiggyness.
I apologize.
I will stand by it but no offense was intended.
I am not a big Yamaha guy, I am a small idiot working for a living that some think I do well.
your 150 TXRA has the lock collar assy as well.
leave it out or assemble it incorrectly and the gearcase knocks at an in gear idle.
wont hurt anything its just aggrevating.
whats bad is when I have to install it correctly the customer is already mad cause he paid one of the local backyardigan mobile service techs to replace the water pump he now thinks they tore uphis lower unit then gets mad cause I charge to remove the gearcase and water pump and correctly reinstall all the parts.
however the exact procedure is in the yamaha factory service manual.
but NONE of the yamaha units should be in any other gear than nuetral for gearcase removal. thats a holdover from SOME, not all, of the old mercury outboards.
but in all fairness at least I did not use the term,----- seahorse knows.
but your thing about a slider is way way wrong as well.
