It's time to trade in my trusty Volvo Penta I/O after 20+ years of great service. I've never had outboards before and seek sage advice. I'm seriously looking at a Century 2600 Walkaround with twin 200 FS installed. The engines have 780 hrs on them. They appear to be in great shape with no corrosion and regular maintenance. Compression check showed all good. What is a realistic life expectancy for these engines? What typically goes wrong and at how many hours? Is there anything specific I should look at while inspecting and running them before I buy?

All help is greatly appreciated.

Were they used mostly in freshwater or saltwater?......it could make a big difference in the longevity of the motors....

They have been used in salt water, with regular flushes done after each outing.

10 years in saltwater would be something to consider....maybe find some freshwater motors?.....A potential problem with saltwater motors is nuts/bolts/fasteners that can break due to corrosion upon removal for any repairs or maintenance....

Truer words have never been spoken as with salt water seizing bolts. I ended up having to buy a used power head for my yamaha 50 because of so many broken bolts but it didnt stop me for going in saltwater
